Filmi Duniya
I was ebullient after watching Inglourious Basterds, a class from Tarentino. Reviving the thoughts of good old cinema I used to watch and not egregious cinema I am forced to watch these days.
I have an affinity to watch movies, a very very strong one. But these days, esp box office blockbuster movies, I get qualm after watching them.
So what is that which is changing, my over-expectation of good movies or strong degradation of bollywood movies.
I am watching movies since I don't know, may be before I realized that I am watching a movie. My father is great lover of hindi cinema, and because of that may be I have grown extreme fondness for Bollywood. But this inclination was not just commercial cinema, but also critically acclaimed Parallel Cinema. I don't know Burger generation even know about Parallel Cinema, but it is there as it was always there.
Cinema is changing, filling life with words, music, colors and now a day even vociferous violence, and pornographic. Instead of showing intricate relationships, changing scenarios of world, making a strong point in community movies are made which such halfheartedness that they can't even make the point which sometime they intend to do so, or sometime they don't even have a point. What is Ghazini all about, I still wonder, but it is one of the biggest blockbuster bollywood has given and we dawdle with these kind of movies. Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi tries to prove a point, showing some intricate moments but still it wasn't as meticulous effort as earlier legacy of the director was i.e. DDLJ.
Have you watched Pyaasa, ooh I thing I am asking the wrong question :). Have you heard about the movie Pyaasa by Guru Dutt, a genius of his age, much more talented than Raj Kapoor the showman. I believe that it is one of the finest work by Bollywood, comparable or may be superior to even Shawshank Redemption, a flawless milestone by Hollywood.
Cinema is changing, 1930 when it was basically a very faint attempt, or rather mixture of tainted independence effort and drama. 1940 continues with some movies making a very strong point of independence and some of the vital social issues.
But the golden era of Indian Cinema lies in 1950 to mid 60's, the best movies of all time ranging from Pyaasa, Aawara, Mughal-e-Aazam, do bigha Zameen, and lot's more. It was time of emerging India, from colonial expansion and movies mediated some of the very critical social issues and point was made.
1970's angry young man was an answer to corruption, poverty and other industrialization and labor issues. I wont say that they don't made their point, they had but there was too much repetition of same Inspector, with a criminal brother :). But in between all this, this era produced few of the greatest comedies of all time. Golmaal, Chupke Chupke and countless others. Not even that movies made on very minute subjects but handled in the most expertise way, esp Chhoti Si Baat and Anand, few of my all time best list.
Lot of thing changed in 1980's to late 90's, it was an era of Romantic movies, with some of the best romantic movies of all time. Trio Khan emerged with some of the best romantic movies ever made. My favorite after watching many all time best Hollywood romantic genre is still Kabhi Haan, Kabhi Naa.
And then the era of globalization era of progress and happiness, also an era of increased terrorist activities are the main theme of movies these days. Also trying to portray equivocate youth. In the context Love Aaj Kal is a nice effort but not that much efficient in making up its point.
Lagaan, Swadesh, Khaki, Rang De Basanti, Taare Zameen par, are some of the best movies which an era of emerging India has given vindictive and quite vindicating in nature.
Still a lot to learn, a lot to make and a lot to view.
PS: These are my personal views. Blog was becoming too big so an abrupt end!!!!
