Last Decade (Part 2 of 3 )
KILLER TIDE
Joined IIT Kanpur, things were easing down slowly. Getting adjusted in pragmatism, living till now in my dreams. Don't want to bore with that stuff. I came back for end-sem break. It was nice to be home after six months for more than couple of days I guess. I still remember I had to leave as new sem was about to begin. It was morning of 28 Dec I guess and there was a big news flash about Tsunami. What the hell is that, I watched and very soon I realize we live in very dangerous world, and until we confide with the laws of nature these disasters will repeat from time to time and we will be annihilated as I saw on TV that day. I had seen Sea-Waves, but these waves rising more than 3 storey building and if I have to see that I would be dead before even water had touched me.
I was studying Civil Engineering, and it was this incident which had considerably had risen the interest in Earthquakes, exactly what the hell is that and how to avoid them. I may not be able to design a house, but I can suggest how to prevent life when a house experience EQ waves. Anyway but this incident as it had affected the whole world, Indian sub-continent, given opportunity to show mercy and hearty nature, and lot of money on the research which I still wonder where the actually are the results. But this incidence what definitely a wake for me to identify that I want to learn one thing in my life, what is Earthquake.
RUNNING RIOT
It was exam time board exam of 10th. I just had clue that something very filthy had been done in Gujarat. I believe it was my English exam and I prayed that exam should be postponed may be due to some kind of riot in Kanpur. I remember there was sharp uprising due to some activist, but the killing of ACP made the administration very strict and that was the last day any bitter news served on dinner in Kanpur.
Exam over, and now as I am curious always, I remember taking out some old newspapers and reading them esp Gujarat related events. I was shocked, aghast and preposterous to take so much at one shot. India was shining but this brought acid-hole in the shine.
I still remember one event, a woman was killed but before killing her the angry MOB killed the 3 month fetus in her stomach and I dont want to explain how.
PLANE DRAMA
I will never forget this drama, but I was growing and it was one of the first incident which had portrayed the political complexities. News channel were still not enough even on cables. DD National and metro kind of had monopoly on news. So everything I had seen I remember was through that. Vajpayee, one of the finest and best diplomat PM India ever had, was in a big dilemma, free the terrorist or let 177 people die. I believe Indian diplomats must have done their best to reduce the ransom, and get the boarders alive even in very hostile nation of Afghanistan under the rule of Taliban. I hated them that day because I believe because of their hostility India was deferred not to go for military lookout.
My mind was still not ready to digest all those complexities but I get to know for sure one thing, people just love their present, they don't want to remember past, they give damn about future but they want their present as best as possible irrespective that some decisions in present can make the future fly high and bring the monstrous concrete hulks down.
